Re: 5th Batallion 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division...And PROUD!

Thanks for your very astute assessment son. You have articulated very well what I wanted to say about "Kill" and the various postings I have been reading. As a Nam vet, I enlisted (Army Med corps), but I was drafted first. I wanted some choice and say in the matter, and did want to serve, but in essence, I was a draftee. I agree with you that "Kill" is pretty much just matter of fact portrayal of real war, the good, bad, and ugly. I am somewhat puzzled at the reaction of some of the current servicemen who posted here, but then again, they're probably jarheads (no offense intended, the Marines bailed out my outfit more than once), and they're mostly wired different. Anyway, I don't see "Kill' as a dis on the military or the guys in theatre at this time. Any war is what it is: a lot of disfunctionality, a lot of screw ups, a clash of personalities, and a lot of real ugly situations for all involved. The best also can come out from the grunts that are stuck in these bad situations. The total camaraderie, the complete "I'll cover your ass" mentality. And on occasion, some very real heroic actions by soldiers in the field.

I also think there is a very different set of grunts who are draftees versus the enlistee. Today's all volunteer military has projected themselves into hell, but by choice. Sometimes they may have some very serious second thoughts, but they are signed on by their own accord. Now, the Guard being called up for multiple hitches, that’s a different matter all together. Very bad way to run a military.

Actually, I served with a lot of very good soldiers who were draftees. They had a somewhat fatalistic approach to the whole thing, not always real happy about their situation , but when it came down to the nitty gritty, they did their job and covered their buddy’s ass. These guys who are protesting about "Kill", and think that this is just some “liberal” put down seem like they're just wound a little too tight. I don't think I would want them in my Platoon. They are probably the really twitchy ones who go off way too easily. In the end, we all just wanted to get the hell out of dodge and go home. You may want to get in the action at first, but believe me, it got old real fast.
