I agree, once the fetus is born, it is independent.

Hardly, a newborn child is not much more independent than a fetus. In fact a fetus is probably less demanding of a mother's time and effort than a newborn.

If a mother neglected a newborn she'd be guilty of murder. And from a a previous thread degs - absent a substitute, yes she is compelled to breast feed the child.
