we want catholic back
by TwoWitnesses

For centuries, catholic has been a word, an adjective, used in Greek, Roman, and French all well before the Christian Church in Rome claimed it for their own back in the 4th century CE. At that point, I suppose, it also became a noun. I'm here to contend that this valuable word has been hijacked, and thereby its meaning has changed. Where it may not be attractive to you to be A Catholic, it still may be a virtuous quality to simply be catholic. This would be true if one is religious or not. Even to an atheist being catholic should be a positive quality.

According to Webster, to be catholic (small "c"), is universal; not parochial; not narrow-minded, partial or bigoted; liberal; as catholic tastes. An all-around GREAT person! Right? This is who we all may wish to grow in to. Catholicity (as opposed to Catholicism) is indeed a virtue, and a state not ordinarily reached until extensive growth and experience have taken place. Which "wide-minded" people out there would truly be qualified to be called catholic?

Now the question may arise asking if a Catholic can be catholic. Perhaps, but my point is that the adjective is truly secular. It has been kidnapped and held for ransom. Without any religious pronouncement, we should take it back and praise its true virtue. With it, we may well find a way to spread unity, not favoritism and segregation.
