Generation Kill: A Voyeur's thrill
by Eskimo Joe
This evening I watched a segment of Generation Kill for the first and last time. More complete bull from filmmakers with a great amount of opinions and very little knowledge. The troops are all stereotypical and shallow in presentation. The dialogue is silly and juvenile; as if all those combat troops in Iraq are high school delinquents. It reminds me of what Samuel Fuller, the director, said about War Movies (to paraphrase): If you could sit in a theater and know the fear and smell the terrible smells and have a lad next to you killed horribly; then and only then will a war film be accurate for the non-veteran viewer. As a former grunt, who served in combat at the very sharp end of the spear; all I see and hear from Generation Kill is vicarious titillation for the voyeur at the very safe end of a cable hookup.
