It does (live up to the hype) -- especially if you see it projected in Imax format. That opening six mins, and certain various sequences within the movie, particularly the panoramic sequences, were shot on Imax cameras.

So Dark Knight is huge in both scope and in its booming, rumbling sound. The score sounds especially rich and thrilling during the Imax cinema experience.
