Who is “we?”

We, as in you and I, don’t seem to agree on what necessarily constitutes fair restitution for a life is unjustly taken. And that disagreement doesn’t appear to be especially anomalous. So whose idea of fairness should the state enforce? Because, I gotta tell you, if I can count on the state to make good on everything I feel I’ve been unfairly denied over the years, well, someone had better get ready to make a list.

Or is this idea of fairness subject to negotiation and defined by consensus? If that’s the case, then I suppose I’ll just have to champion my idea of fairness against everyone else’s.

Blech. How tedious is that?
