It's been nearly fifteen years, but there was at least one significant hip-hop cover song worth mentioning: Snoop Doggy Dogg's cover of Slick Rick's "La-di Da-di" (renamed "Lodi Dodi," I believe) on Snoop's first album, Doggystyle. It was a straight cover song, full-length, albeit with a few lyrical tweaks to tailor the Rick-specific lines (mostly references to his own name, or to his signature 1980s fashions) to fit Snoop's west-coast, pot-clouded vibe: "Went back in/I forgot my Kangol" became "Went back in/I forgot my indo," for example.
