Love these stories of mistaken ethnic identity. I look very Mediterranean with high cheekbones and pitchblack hair but I'm very fair and light-eyed. At home in the NYC-area no one ever questions my background. But whenever I go to Europe I am ALWAYS asked--they just can't figure me out! When I say I'm Jewish I get all sorts of reactions ranging from surprise to embarrassment to AHA! (mystery solved).
