satire and stereotypes

EJ's got a lot of the underlying stuff right here: we all stereotype, whether we mean to or not. A lot of insidious stereotypes are cultural, omnipresent and deeply engrained in our subconscious. But this is exactly why good satire is good for uprooting, rather than "activating" stereotypes. Anything that alerts us to our subconscious stereotypes helps us uproot them. What satire should activate is a better awareness of the stereotype. This is the opposite of reinforcing the stereotype.
