Assuming for the sake of argument that one perceives some invested authority in the church, it may make sense to 'double-check' one's own personal experiences against this authority, and question personal experiences that don't seem to fit in. They do have an out for personal experience as they posit a devil that can masquerade as an angel, after all.

It might vaguely resemble a peer review or majority-rule process, with the caveat that the catholic system of authority is not reality-based. It's all a construct of articles of faith, but within that set of assumptions may seem reasonable enough.
