How is spiritual guidance of any real utility?
by JGC

When a conflict arises where you utterly and sincerely believe that you have been guided by the holy spirit to an understanding that isn’t in agreement with the understanding the pope, cardinals, etc., believe they’ve been guided to by the holy spirit, how is it resolved? Is there any way to tell which of you (if either—it’s always possible your both wrong) actually was lead to the right answer?

I’ve raised this question before, with respect to homosexuality. Some Christians believe, as the result of study, prayer and intervention by the holy spirit, they’ve been led to the understanding it’s condemned in and of itself. Other questions believe that by the same process (of study, prayer and intervention by the holy spirit) they’ve been led to the understanding it isn’t condemned in and of itself. How can one reliably determine which interpretation of scripture is correct?
