how can smart people be so dumb?

Once again, liberal intellectualism shoots itself in the foot. It's small wonder why it's perceived to be so out of touch.
This author, and the folks at the New Yorker have once again made the biggest mistake liberal intellectuals can and often DO make. They overestimate the intelligence and attentiveness of the average american. Believe they won't buy a completely bogus story from Swift Boaters about an event they weren't even there to witness? THINK AGAIN. Just one of hundreds of examples where you think the average american will use their noggins to see through the nonsense, and having it cost us 1st place.
The Republicans get it. That's how they can have policies that profoundly go against the best interests of the average american and yet still get their votes. They know that if you can't give your message in a picture or in less than 2 sentences, you'll lose the attention of the average american. A three word lie has more staying power than a whole book worth of truth.
For a brief, shining, and hopefully again obtainable moment, Democrats had a candidate that could actually hold the attention of the average american for a decent enough amount of time to get his message across, only to have the intellectual elite muddy the waters with this kind of nonsense!
No need for political opponents, this season. As others have posted here, the work was done for them by the New Yorker. Had they have done it themselves, they would have risked looking like bigots. Calls of racism, smears, and flat out lying would erupt. But no, this time it's the New Yorker making a joke in which the punchline is on another page that 90% of average americans that saw the cover will never see.
New Yorker, please don't do Mr. Obama any more "favors". He already HAS an opponent.
