There's nothing wrong with having a consumer fetish for some particular product. If you like extravagant cookware, or cars, or something similar, more power to you. "Blatant zombie consumerism" is an oxymoron. How can anything be both "blatant" and "zombie"?

The only dangerous consumerism is the tendency to use store-bought products as a replacement for the other things in life that make us happy. And I don't think that this guy's drowning his sorrows in an iPhone.

But the iPhone is sort of a waste of money...
