Well, no, it's not quite that bad: you could enlist but you couldn't vote, so they said they should give 18-year-olds the right to vote, on the theory that, if you were old enough to die for your country, you ought to have some say in governing it.

And some military bases let you drink on base at 18, on the theory that, if you were old enough to die for your country, you ought to be able to have a beer before you did so.
