I haven't seen the movie yet, but the writer's comments about obesity and the environment are so defensive, I wonder how much he weighs, and whether he drives a Hummer.

Yes, genes have a lot to do with our weight, but it's not as if the laws of physics and chemistry don't apply to obese people. Like everyone else, if they take in more calories than they burn through physical activity, they'll get FAT. And it can't be denied that we have become a nation full of overeating, physically inactive people.

Every corner has a fat-filled fast-food choice. There's cable TV watching at home after spending the whole day working sitting at a computer. And when was the last time you saw kids riding bikes and playing tag? They're more likely to be playing video games or watching movies on DVD.

As a nation, we are insufferably lazy. We want someone to do something about our obesity and environment, someone besides ourselves. We have met the enemy, and he is us.

Writer, face facts. We're wasteful, overfed and really can't think any more (e.g., electing George W. Bush not once, but twice -- or once, if you're not a wingnut).
