This article exists in the land of make believe. Weight gain occurs from a very simple formula. Calories in must exceed calories out. If you eat 3000 calories per day and burn 2999 calories you will slowly gain weight. Genetics play a permissive role in obesity but the environmental factors are much more important. If you have the genetic propensity for obesity and eat 2500 calories/day, but ride a bike and burn 3000 calories (not that hard to do), guess what, you will lose weight. That is not even a diet. The set point argument is complete garbage. How do you explain that the childhood obesity rate in 1976 was 5% for children 5 and younger, 6.5% for children 6-11 and 5% for adolescents 12-19 yrs of age and in 2004 13.9% of 5 yrs and younger are obese, 18.8% of children 6-11 are obese and 17.4% of adolencents are obese. A change in "setpoint", a change in genetics, or a change in environment? There are genetic disorders (Prader-Willi) and neuroendocrine disorder that can lead to obesity but there are the exception and not the rule. Eat less,and exercise more and obesity will decrease.
