Yeah, you're right, it's not quite the same thing. As for social settings, I am also inclined to stress my teaching duties over the research I do. I'm more excited about the teaching, to be honest, and to me it's the greatest honor I've ever had. I get a little thrill every time I remind myself "I teach college!"

So, I haven't earned the honor of calling myself faculty, but the honor of continuing to teach as a grad student IS something I've earned. My program tries to make sure everyone gets one crack at their own class (usually over the summer) for the experience and for their resumes. Since having my first opportunity to teach, I have been asked by my faculty in psychology (and the anthro department as well) to step in on seven additional occasions, most during the regular school year. I do more teaching than many faculty members I know. I love it, and I'm proud of it, regardless of whether folk hold the position in high esteem.
