As a teacher of 29 years experience, I still use and improve upon certain basic instructional methodologies that I learned during teacher education at a state university. Of course, I also spent 25-30 volunteer hours a week in the university "lab school"; where I was an unpaid aide to experienced teachers.
In addition, I have faithfully followed a most valued piece of advice from my first supervising teacher during my student teaching. Namely, to read about educational research and ideas everyday for at least 30 minutes. Educational research can be, at times, dry and downright boring; but daily readings have enabled me to cut through the sometimes obtuse and dense offerings for the more heuristic information. The second, and maybe more valuable, piece of advice was that I should read good literature always. "Always have two or three good books going at any one time." was her sage advice. It has served me well. She was a great teacher.
There is a clear message one can deduce from this. Are schools of education listening?
