Take a load off; you're getting riled for the wrong reasons

I am really sick and tired of this new talk about Wall-e hating fat people...and it's only just begun I'm sure. Every slightly overweight person is likely to have this kind of reaction.
I'm pretty disappointed in Slate too because normally I'm not exposed to such backward thinking as this article entails. The main jest I've gotten is that fat people are being stereotyped and it shouldn't go hand in hand with ecological destruction.
What comes first the chicken or the egg? Wall-E represents a time in the FUTURE. Hello? Did anyone pick up on this being in the future and not right now? I have to ask this seemingly silly question because it seems like the author of this article didn't even realize the main point.
Americans are growing increasingly dependent on machines thus becoming lazier. Add to that the indifference toward politics and the ills that plague modern society and you get indolent people who consume everything around them including guilt food. Becoming fat is an easy visual representation to make of total gluttony.
What I thought was so great about Wall-E was its honesty. It raises the question could something similar to this happen in the future? Obviously, we are not going to live in a spaceship and eat all day.
But aren't we headed in some irreversible direction if things don't start to change drastically now?
Wall-E bravely raised these problems in its simple yet effective representations that yes, are hard to hear for some. But shouldn't we be allowed to raise these issues and be honest?
I commend everyone involved in the making of this movie for illustrating things in a way that everyone can understand. Getting people talking about this is great. Its just too bad that come people can't see the meaning because they're too distracted on someone actually, for once, NOT ignoring the elephant in the room.
