I think Stanton is being just a bit too coy in those interviews. I would agree that Wall-E is predominantly a robotic love story. I would also say that while its other elements lend a certain gravitas, the movie would be utterly unremarkable without the love story.

Even so, how could anyone deny that a political message was intentionally embedded into the film? One corporation runs the world. Excess consumption renders the earth uninhabitable. Children are taught that "Buy N Large is your best friend." Even the presidential seal has been branded with the B&L logo!

No, Wall-E is not just a simple love story. It has undeniable political ambitions, though in my opinion they should be too simplistic to impress adults. (Obviously, my opinion is incongruent with all the great adult press Wall-E has received.)
