Is this the Brookie I know from TT?
Anyway, I too thought the article was a disjointed mish-mash. It seems to promise some useful information on saving money thru better MPG, but fails to follow through with hard data on comparative mileage, reliability, etc. Equally egregiously, it ignores the inconvenient truth that unless you either sell your car or substitute a really solid chunk of car miles with 'cycle miles, you probably won't save much money.
First there's the cost of the vehicle itself, which ranges from $2500 to $15000 (!). Then there's a helmet, jacket, gloves and maybe boots ($300 and up for a decent helmet and a protective jacket). Oh, and insurance, which probably which will probably cost a few hundred a year. And don't forget about maintenance; the first couple of years shouldn't be too bad if you buy new, but in the long run bikes generally require more maintenance expense and frustration (read: pushing) than cars.
Instead of all these content-free wanks about "people are buying bikes to save money," I would love to see some case studies of how much money real people actually save.
