We recently returned from a trip to Italy. That's one place where you always want to have a 1 euro coin in your pocket - that's how much it costs to use a public restroom there!

And I'm not talking about the space-age, self-cleaning jobbies they have in Seattle and LA. Most are filthy! Not to mention the disgusting mess outside. The street people (and sometimes regular folks who are desperate) defecate wherever - in the street, in the bushes, you name it. The bushes outside the public restroom at the Coliseum is filled with stinking piles of toilet paper. It was gross.

I was surprised that a modern Eurpoean country lacked basic sanitation for all (not just those who could afford it). So much for socialism.

Oh, and if there's a restroom attendent, expect to pay a tip in addition to your 1 euro!
