the 'religious' theocratic model of Muslim governing. Ataturk 'reshaped' Turkey in the 1920's after the defeat (and decadence) of the religiously bound Ottoman Empire. His 'anti-religious' rules( no 'fez' for men, no beards, and no veils for women,----would you believe?) are still enshrined in the Turkish Constitution and 'rights for women' were granted even before women could vote in the USA (starting about 1923). Atatruk was the 'model' for Nasser which culminated with the basically Fascist Baathist Party who learned more with visits to Hitler Germany. Between Ataturk and Hitler, Nasser even picked up some 'anti-semeticism' where there is a 'population hate group' always necessary to 'govern the country'. Ataturk had the Greeks Orthodox Christians and Armenians on death marches out of the country, with the Greeks reponding with Turkish death marches out of Greece. And India 'split' into Hindu and Moslem 'countries' with death marches of Hindus and Muslims to their respective corners to Ghandi's dismay. So, there is always a 'hate group' needed to shift attention away from government failings. And 'that' seems to be the lesson here. The need for 'nationalism' contra the goals of 'internationalism'. The Communist hymn the 'Internationale' continues its appeal contra 'national' needs for strong tribal identity.
