That seriously rubbed me the wrong way too. It sounded to me that the author was merely explaining how interlocked he is with his wife. He also knows their differences and was talking about how these things made her stronger. I think that was awesome. I'm not sure what Ann H.'s issue was with the comment, but it seems as though she was predestined to see his words in her own 'that makes no sense' way.
