My liberty is my one capital says one of those gorgeous single ladies in the Paris of a 100 years ago wonderfully described by Colette in "Gigi" and challenging her times in flaunting the economic advantages of not marrying. She describes the well ordered utterly cultivated life style of women attracting rich married lovers who in turn had to pay a great deal for enjoying their charms. The unmarried woman with incomes of her own is in turn well aware of the possibilities of enlarging what she has in investing in the stock market, a freedom forbidden the married woman. Colette´s view on how society benefits from money coming from independent single women has at long last entered the women´s magazines of today. All kinds of markets clearly benefit from a society where more single wealthy women spend independent of men than from more married women. In the economic life of today a married woman spells more than ever a never ending loser. The miseries described by herself and others are indeed a promising indication. I myself prefer the gorgeous show of independence as celebrated in Mamma mia.
