Re: Why we support Affirmative Action:
by spaceghost

Let's talk about racial preferences. Racial Preferences are wrong.

All 43 of our presidents to this point have been white males-Is this a racial preference?

The vast majority of CEOs in this country are white males-Did they get there SOLEY by merits or were others DISQUALIFIED (either de facto or de jure) because they were NOT white males.

It has been the unwritten policy of this country since its inception to give preference to white males. It is the disqualification of others based on this unwritten policy that affirmative action addresses. When you have a situation where the statistics don't match up with the demographics then there is something CAUSING this difference. It isn't chance or just 'hard work.' There are usually other factors in place as well.

Maybe, just maybe, all of the venom hurled at affirmative action is the painful realization that being a white male will no longer be a privileged position. As the playing field is leveled, more white males will see minorities excelling and achieving at a better rate because they are no longer disqualified for not being a white male. This must really be a blow to the ego. THERE MUST BE SOME OTHER REASON BECAUSE NON WHITE MALES JUST CAN'T BE THAT GOOD. Oh, affirmative action, that's it.

I know a number of African Americans who were admitted into Ivy League grad schools. None got in with a 'C' average like our current president.

For a long time in this country you had to be a white male to be considered qualified in the first place. This is the biggest Racial Preference in the history of the country and ALWAYS WILL BE, but because it is the default position nobody truly addresses it for what it is, a (de facto) RACIAL PREFERENCE. Since we have established that Racial Preference is wrong, then please tell me how we begin to redress the unspoken, de facto racial preference of being a white male? Please don't tell me what we shouldn't do, but address what we should do.
