What if you friend had not wanted to take the risk of an emergency C-Section? Would you advocate The Government's right to force her to have a C-Section?
What other kinds of invasive procedures would grant The Government the right to compell people to undergo simply to save someone elses' life?
As for endangering the life of the host woman - remember that the death rate for delivery is three times as great as from abortion, and there are lots and lots of other medical complications and risks associated with carrying to term.
That is why the anti-choicers sometimes oppose the "Mother's Health" clause - because no matter what, STATISTICALLY it is ALWAYS healthier for the host woman to have an abortion than to carry to term, thus a Health Exception is essentially an Abortion On Demand exception.
And no we don't have to reach a point on Both Sides. The US Constitution is the sole determinant here. The only reason there would be to reach a common point from both sides is if there is a basic Constitutional right to regulate a woman's - or any person's for that matter - internal organs in the name of saving someone's life.
And there simply is no such Constitutional empowerment of The Government. In fact there is an explicit prohibition against this in the 13th Amendment's proscription against involuntary servitude. The Government cannot compel a woman into servitude either to the "fetal person" (when and if such a legal status ever comes to pass), nor can it compel the woman into servitude to The Government's "compelling interest in promoting life". The ban on Government action here is clear, absolute and leaves no room for exceptions.
If the "compelling interest in promoting life" were a sufficient exception to this Amendment, then there is no reason The Government could not demand organ donations from people as The Government sees fit. After all, organ donations "save innocent lives".
No, there is no room for compromise on the legal issues. If you want to seek compromise on policies that reduce the need or demand for abortions VOLUNTARILY, that is a different matter, but on the right of persons to completely control their bodies, there is no compromise because there is no basis for Governmental Regulation
