“I mean, that's the lesson usually garnered from the story of the Cities of the Plain, isn't it?”
>>Only if you get the lesson wrong. The idea that the sin of Sodom had anything to do with homosexuality is a recent (mid 13th century) re-interpretation of the text which departs entirely from the traditional understanding. Where other books in the bible refer to the story they identify the sin of Sodom as inhospitality and lack of charity, with explicit reference to failing to feed the needy (Ezekiel 16:49-49: "This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, surfeit of food and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.")Isaiah 1:2-23 lists the various sins of Sodom, which includes idolatry, rebellion, injustice, murder, greed, theft, covetousness and mistreating the poor, but does not mention homosexuality. Jeremiah in several verses lists the various sins of Sodom, mentioning idolatry, pride, oppression, false prophets, but again homosexuality doesn’t make the list). Lamentations 4:3-6 identifies the sin as cruelty and the failure to care for the young and poor.
Anyone who seriously wanted their acts to be informed by the lesson of Sodom would concentrate their effort on helping the needy and feeding the hungry.
