Sheild women from ideas!
by RalphS

Apparently a women considering abortion must be protected from viewpoints that run contrary to those she currently holds?

Dispute the factual claims, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the government giving viewpoints to people making a decision. If it requierd a 10,000 page document to be read out, I could see the problem there as it would really be inhibiting the abortion from even taking place. But a short statement - one the doctor can just read in a sarcastic tone if he really wants - what's the big deal? Those who believe abortion should be legal frequently say they trust women and that women (or "a woman and her doctor") are really good at making the decision as to whether an abortion is the best option in a difficult circumstance*. If that is the case, is there so much to fear from a little statement? Again, I'm not defending any blatenet untruths in the statement - if there really are any - but the idea of a statement in general. Similarly, if someone who wanted to buy a gun had to read something that explianed the dangers of gun ownership, what's wrong with that? It's not like the state is forbidding any contrary viewpoints from being expressed.

(*Personally I believe it's possible for women, like men, to sometimes decide to do things that are immoral and harmful to others - sometimes because of bad reasoning and sometimes out of selfishness. Especially when they have a serious personal interest in the issue.)
