I was 20 in 1994 . . .

And we really did say "word" and "mad (whatever)". A lot, yo. And it was a very good year: some of the best rock and hip hop of my generation dropped that summer, plus there was a feeling of empathy for things like environmental causes, gay rights, and humanity in general which was only starting to grow in my generation between '91 and '94 really. Before someone who is way older says "awww, innit that sweet, those kids had their mini-60s then!" in an ironic way, remember this: the social agency for things like gay youth really sprung to life in the early 1990s. It wasn't all Hammer and baggy pants, yo: this was the cusp of the rave era for mainstream America and also a pivotal time in rock music with the likes of Blur and other bands making progress. Kids I know who are in college nowadays even have an odd nostalgia for the early 90s. We'll all see this movie.
