NickD: While the society you describe as accepting men at whatever their level of success might or might not be regardless of aptitude might be nice a goal, it does not exist in any empirical sense of which I am aware.
Nick D,
Not sure you will read this still, but I wrote earlier. And my husband does live this, in an empirical manner. And you are right, there will always be people he has to "prove" himself to because of it. Happens all the time. But, and maybe this is just a unique quality he has, but he is usually able to do it. And when he isn't, damn them. Seriously. That is what I mean by social courage. Until, and excuse me for the drama, but until Rosa Parks sat at the front of the bus, that wasn't possible either.
But I cannot speak to most women, only to myself. And I love him because he does have goals and priorities and isn't, by any means, a lazy bum. He isn't sitting around day in and day out watching ESPN. He is working and achieving, just in his own way, a way that isn't tied to a mere paycheck. He is fighting for what he believes in. I couldn't love him more for it.
