Mr. Greenberg fails to understand the meaning of patriotism. He thinks red, white, and blue as a symbol of patriotism for the Republicans to utilize at their will. Patriotism is not a "debate" on our national idenity nor is it a referendum on how Amercans feel about their country. It is sense of belonging to a nation and the ideals it holds dear; a foundation of pride and love for something greater than ourselves. Patriotism is not exclusivily a Republican thing, it is an American thing. A liberal can be a just as patriotic as a conservative if he/she believes that the America is worth fighting for and will uphold America's idealism for the rest of the world. Mr. Greenberg does not see it that way. That is why liberals have a hard time winning over the general American populace. Average Joe believes America is worth more than words and sound bites. He/She wants a candidate that truly loves the American ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Can the democratic candidates convince the American people that they believe in those ideals? Currently, I see the Democratic party talking about what they would "do" for you as their electee and not what they "mean" for you if they get elected. The reason: they bought into the mix that patriotism is a non-win campaign talking point. Mr. Obama used the 4th of July to say what everyone thought: Liberals say they are patriotic, but they don't want patriotism to direct their policies or factor in with their decisions. Maybe, just maybe, the left side of the isle will come to understand that Republicans don't monopolize Patriotism, they believe in the ideals it represents. That is the difference.
