Because one of the ongoing themes IS the belief that by combating homosexuality, they ARE attacking a real problem that will somehow nebulously fix the world.

The belief that if they can erradicate it, and other sins, It will bring the world back (?) into harmony with what God wills.

The nebulous quality of saving the world by bashing gays, and sex in general, strikes me as rather like the business strategy of the underpants gnomes.
