Paul was as much about the English Music Hall tradition and skiffle band stuff as he was about rock (much as he loves early American rockers - who are as much country and barrelhouse blues as anything else). John was always the hard rocker of the two while Paul was the poppy guy (cf., Wings, solo work, etc.). I can't imagine John doing a theme for a James Bond movie, for example, while for Paul - no problemo! John was ultimately the more imaginative and innovative of the two, both in his music and his mate.
George was a good musician with one set of great songs dying to get out (75% of the work on All Things Must Pass, not counting the throwaway jam disc).
Ringo's drumming was irrelevant, but he was cute.
