Re: What the hell is feminism?
by Jams

"Jams: feminism = discrimination against men by liberals" -
Freki

I didn't say anything about liberals. I said feminists. Why would you conflate feminists with liberals? I'm a liberal. Feminists are sexists.

"So, we all seem to be pretty much on the same page except the two men who feel victimized. I have to ask...if feminism actually meant what ladykrystyna, Selene, Malarkey and I think it means, would you two call yourselves feminists?" - Freki

I don't "feel" victimized, but on behalf of billions of men: thanks for minimizing our suffering.

To answer your question, no, I wouldn't. To start with, I'd ask why we're using such a sexually biased name for a movement that claims to be interested in equality. Secondly, all the above definitions are dependent on the assumption that women are disadvantaged in our society because they are women. Clearly, outcomes speak to a very different reality.

- More men in prison.
- Men die younger.
- Men are more likely to be murdered.
- Men are more likely to be assaulted.
- In many states men are assumed guilty in domestic violence calls.
- Women enjoy greater support from more numerous social programs.
- Men are more likely to be homeless.
- Men are more likely to die on the job (even if we exclude military service).
- MEN WHO ARE RAPED ARE VASTLY LESS LIKELY TO RECEIVE TREATMENT OR JUSTICE THAN WOMEN WHO ARE RAPED (and more likely to be falsely accused - for obvious reasons)
- Men have fewer rights with regard to their children
- the list goes on and on and on....

While feminism didn't create all (or even most of these realities), it's devotees certainly spend a lot of time denying the suffering of men (as men) while promoting the supremacy of women's concerns.

My favorite one goes like this: miners don't suffer because they're men, but because they're poor. Of course, let's keep the poor women standing over their graves on the down-low shall we?
