"It's quite common to read, usually from liberal opponents of the
engagement in Iraq, that George W. Bush's administration hasn't asked
the American people to make any sacrifices. I must confess that I never
quite understand this criticism. As a society, we collectively
contribute a great deal from our common treasury to give Iraq a
fighting chance to recover from three decades of war and fascism and to
prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemies of civilization.
And as fellow citizens, we experience the agony of loss when our
soldiers, aid workers, civil servants, and others are murdered. (That
each of these is a volunteer is a great cause for national pride.)"
That is one of the lamest things I have read or heard from any supporter of the Iraq Fiasco. "I never quite understand this criticism." I bet you don't. When a nation goes to war a nation goes to war. They don't fiddle fart around running up their credit card bills like Bush suggests. They get behind their soldiers and push with all they have and the enemy is defeated. The enemy was defeated easily. We won the war, but we can't win the occupation. The surge is working so we can't leave? Brilliant! Let's all send books!
I did send books, to our soldiers, during the invasion. Hundreds of dollars worth of books, comics, DVDs and video games, and Lifesavers they could put in their mouths in the hot desert if they were low on water. And chemical ice packs and sun tan lotion and ice chests, before the military cut off the unapproved supply lines from home. I support the troops to the point that I want them ALL back NOW!
Once a stupid monkey found a jar with an apple inside. He put his paw in the jar and grabbed the apple. But when he tried to pull his hand out holding the apple, it was too big for the hole. No matter how he tugged and pulled, and thrashed, he couldn't pull his hand and the apple out, and he would not let go. He wanted that apple! Finally, he starved to death, still holding onto that rotting apple. This story isn't just referring to Bush (though the resemblance is remarkable, see the website, Bush or a Chimp). I am also referring to people like Hitchens, who keep trying to come up with something to make the Iraq disaster acceptable.
And what do you mean by, "we," Hitchens? I know the Brits came along for the ride, but you'll never be an American. You're too much of a git.
