There are some interesting things to learn about racism in my neck of the woods -- its not nearly as long ago as you might imagine.
The good thing is that we have also come a long way toward healing a lot of this. In my town we have about a 50-50 split between "white" and "black" (a nod here to jazzguitarman in that not many are all one or the other).... and our various issues and problems are discussed and dealt with far more transparently than in most places in the US.
There are many, many people who believe we are on the cusp of changing "race" relations and Obama represents that to a lot of people.
It is not his only good point - but it is one.
That being said, it is also one of the points about him that some people hate.
Reality bites, doesn't it?
