Producing the next generation of children (the labor force) is something that benefits everyone in a society. It is in our interest to support families so that they will raise moral, well-educated citizens.

Families can be supported in many ways that are not direct subsidies of child care. For example, paying a family wage, tax breaks for all parents, low-cost housing, health insurance, or cheap college tuition. The 1950's was actually a time when families got a lot of support from the GI Bill benefits.
