One of the more interesting posts here some time ago was by Fortunateson and included a careful analysis of Paul's statement about "manlayers" in the original Greek. He effectively showed that rather than using standard Greek words to refer to homosexuality, Paul coined words based on translating relevant portions of Leviticus into Greek.
This suggests to me that Paul was not interested in simply arguing the topic on its merits but rather involved invoking the authority of Leviticus as the source of his argument.
Now, a counter argument here (which I did not address with him at that time) was that Paul tended to appropriate beliefs of his audience to make his case. We see this with the Gnostics and the Archons of the Aeons (plus Sophia!), and other places where he more or less used the beliefs of his audience to make the points he wished to make.
This raises a valid question, IMO, whether Paul's writings are particularly authoritative in any regard to anyone outside these traditions.
