Re: Is basic civics not being taught these days?
by shematwater

If anything, we live in a “persistent and determined supermajority rules” country. As others have noted, we do have constitutionally-protected rights after all. And as I recall shematwater, you're a Mormon, correct? You of all people should be damned glad that we do have those protections.

I am very glad we have those rights (and I am LDS). But let me ask you this. How many people would agree to legalize Polygamy? This is a religious practice, a personal choice that effects only those willing to enter it. Why is it illegal? However, most people in the United States that scream for a woman's right to an abortion would fight against this practice. Am I doing anything more?

On a separate but related note, I’m sick to death of hearing armchair moralists call folks irresponsible and self-indulgent for wanting the same rights and considerations that the name-callers take as their natural due. Being responsible is a fine thing. But it seems to me we ought to think seriously about the consequences of our own attitudes, actions, and choices before we criticize others.

I agree. However, I am in constant meditation as to what my actions are, what they should be, and how they effect everyone around me. I am also aware that many actions that seem to effect only the person engaged in them, truly effect a wide range of people. When the majority wished to restrict this actions, based on a belief that they will harm society, they have every right to do so. When people scream for personal choice in matters that have harmful effects to others I have to speak out against it (regardless of teh opposition or the escuses they give).
