Re: All right, I'm calling BS

I understand this very well. But the problem is a little more complicated than that.

First of all, many of these values are not merely religious, and so religious people have every right under the constitution to campeign for and pass such against them. Among these values are things such as abortion, drugs, marriage, and similar things that effect the legal rights and physical wellfare of the people.

Now, people claim that these are individual rights, but they do effect others. Each in it's own way.

Abortion effects the unborn child. (For those who don't think the child is alive just know that the child feels pain within three months, and can survive outside the mother in six.) Also, with current laws a woman can have an abortion without her husbands knowledge, thus disrupting a family unit. A girl can do so without parental consent, causing the same problems.

I don't really need to comment of Drugs.

Marriage is a very political union. The fifth amendment gives you the right to refuse to testify against yourself. The laws have held that in a marriage a husband and wife do not have to testify against each other. Also with marriage comes adoption laws, and child costudy. All this must be considered.

I know of no one who would ever agree to a religion required by the state. But most want to see that those actions that have an effect on society have the appropriate effect (at least as they see it). As the majority of the Nation is religious the laws will reflect the values they hold.
