Re: No, you don't need to be an Astrophysicist

You're right that a lot of male engineers don't particularly like their jobs. And I can say from experience they liked the coursework even less. But I think while the blogger correctly says that women can pretty much go into whatever area of study they want (as can men), there is a fundamental difference between how many men and women view college.

(warning, broad sweeping generalization here) - Most men go to college to train in a field that will get them a job. Since business, computer science and engineering are usually the most popular majors this would support that men want lucrative jobs regardless of future enjoyment (but many of those CS and engr's like their fields and would go insane in "feeling" majors). Some women go to college for the same purpose, but others go to study something that interests them, whether or not that major will directly lead to them getting a well paying (or any) job. I have no numbers but I'd say it's FAR more likely for a woman to be in a major that is known to either yield low paying jobs (like elementary ed) or potentially no jobs (various humanities), and far more likely for men to be in a major that has a direct link to higher paying jobs (which may or may not also be tied to technical/math proficiency).
