too cheap a shot at Disney/Pixar
by TjerkJan
Dan Kois' piece on straight to dvd sequels is way to easy. I'll accept that to some viewers the sequels won't match their awful reputation. What I don't understand is why the new Disney/Pixar collaboration should take the fall for the CG crap that others studios are churning out these days. Shrek, Over The Hedge, Ice Age are obviously no match for hand-drawn Disney classics, maybe not even for their cheap prequels. But Kois suggests that Ratatouille is the only significant Pixar film living up to those standards. But Toy Story, Toy Story II, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles in my view all purvey a richness and charm reminiscent of Disney's classics and beating the sequels Kois holds so dearly at least by being originals. Originals driven by character and story, not by shininess, meta references or a pop culture montage. Lasseter and Catmull only want Kois to fall in love with new films in stead of settling for sequels that bear slight resemblances to the good old days. We'll talk again when Disney, under Pixar creative leadership, starts releasing new and original hand-drawn features again.
