If Slate is looking to make "let's revisit unloved movies featuring comic characters" a regular feature, I'll be happy to provide first drafts for the following:

Flash Gordon: Incredibly witty dialogue that meshes seamlessly with the four-color farcical elements.

Catwoman: A movie that gave nobody what was expected, primarily because it completed inverted the classical male/female roles of the genre, and secondly because they expected Batman or Michelle Pfeiffer to appear.

Popeye: Altman being Altman, and actually demonstrating on film that Robin Williams has the ability to *act*.
