There are quite a number of private high schools in Seattle. And they have grown in huge numbers since 1970, and all have wait lists. There are (off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm missing a few):
Lakeside, Blanchet, University Prep, Seattle Prep, Holy Names, O'Dea, Bush, and Northwest
So that's 8 in a city of 500,000. Not insignificant. And I think I'm missing one like Concordia Lutheran or something. How many high schools are in the public schools? I think it's about the same number. Isn't that unusual?
And, I disagree about the 70% being older, or single no kids people. If you can find the numbers to support that I'd like to see it. Like I said there are 13 kids on my parents' block. Eleven are white and two are bi-racial. And only one goes to a Seattle Public School. Again, I think this is wrong.
You may think it is going to get worse, but I disagree. Neighborhood control, and listening to all parents will have an enormous positive effect on all students. Look at what happened at Madrona, for example. Heavily involved white families fled because their input was discouraged. It sounds very similar to the difficulties my family faced at Leschi 20 years ago. I hope the Supreme Court decision gives the school district pause. White people who have resources and want their kids to have good educations are not evil. They are not ignorant or narrow minded. If they live in Seattle, they are probably not super conservative or completely naive. (How many times have I voted for Jim McDermott? Many.)
So, why don't we step back and let this settle. It isn't the end of the world. But I do think that the district owes something to the families it has pushed away in its effort to "diversify" the schools. It owes them a chance to come back. It owes them a chance to be heard. It owes them reasonable concessions in an effort to provide equal education to all.
