The man presciently wrote about the insanity of invading Iraq prior to the invasion. The more interesting question is not whether he will "play" with the voting bloc but whether or not he should be the VP. I say yes.

Also, I don't think he's as conservative as people make him out to be. He's pretty populist. When he won his Senate seat, he said he wanted to pattern his career after the anti-corporate Moynihan.
