It was interesting to see the reference to the Jack Kirby cartoon. Having grown up a fan of Marvel Comics, the image did seem vaguely familiar, although I thought it was influenced by the Hulk.
BTW, did you become a NYorker "writer" by virtue of your caption? If so, contributing to Slate must be another feather in your cap!
