Oh the endless confusion! Especially calling people by names that are not their name. My husband's best friend has two brothers. I was introduced to the younger brother (and had heard stories about him before I met him) as "Rupert". Everyone around when I met him and everyone I heard refer to him, including both his older brothers, his mother and father, my husband and his sister and mother, etc etc etc etc etc., refered to him when he was not around as "Rupert" and called him "Rupert" to his face on occasions where we would see him.
One day someone, I think my husband's mother, said something about not coming over because they'd be out of town for "Mikey's" graduation. I said, who's Mikey?
Yeah, "Rupert"'s real name is Michael. Everyone STILL makes fun of me about this, and I maintain with a great deal of indignation, that every person I have ever interacted with including the guy's OWN MOTHER calls him RUPERT - for the SEVEN YEARS I have known my husband and his friend - so how in the name of all that's shiny was I supposed to know his name was MICHAEL?? wtf, people.
My husband still just laughs and says things like "who names their kid rupert???" and "rupert? you thought that was an italian name?" Like I was supposed to be judgemental or ask nosy questions when I met the guy. "RUPERT? That's your name, REALLY? Why is that your name?" wow, I'm sorry I'm not more rude, ha. They're crazy. They call my husband's brother "Cheech" - I don't know how it's spelled. Not his name, though. But in fairness he does have the same first name as his father so that makes a little more sense. Only the far side of my mom's family (grandpa's cousin's kids) does that - they have a bunch of dudes that are all Seymour something the fourth and fifth and whatnot and they go by things like "Robin" and "Chip".
When I was little a neighbor had a dog with the same name as me. I found it mildly embarrassing and weird, but I wasn't scarred for life or anything. Still. Much as I'd like to name my dog "Bob" because I think it would be a hilarious name for a little dog, I'm giving them goofy names like "Pie" and "Neener" (as in, "neener neener neeeeeeeeeeeenerrr!")
