its yggy:
I find myself kind of rooting for high gas prices! Now, I don't own a car, so you might think that's just schadenfreude. But I think we have to get away from imported oil. It might be a little different in Canada, but in the US here people need to change.

A lot of our consumer tendencies don't reflect reality. Prices are supressed or inflated in all kinds of ways. Some Americans are like shocked and outraged that gas prices are so high. They don't get that they're the reasons why! They just don't get that!

And you know that it's only going up from here!

My thoughts exactly! Granted, with a country as spread out as the US (especially my beloved home, where everything is pretty far apart), it does pose some economic problems more complicated than just sucking it up and buying a hybrid.

But, I'm a car owner who commutes about 45 minutes each way, daily, so I do feel the pinch somewhat, despite driving a fairly efficient Toyota Corolla.

The thing is, personal economics aside, I'm glad that our gas prices are starting to equalize with what most of the rest of the world pays. While I understand that $5 - $9 a gallon presents a bigger problem to us than to Europeans, (whose countries, it has been pointed out, are not big enough for us to park our cars in.) with our expansive landscape, something has to convince Americans that it is in their best interests to put away the Hummers and downsize their rides.

Of course, we'll then have to find some other way to signify our prosperity and status. Suggestions?
