Cassandra/Bananaboat: They’re against having “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance even though our forefathers founded this country under God. All you have to do is read the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Bill of Rights for starters.
LeRoy: Yes. All you have to do is read the Constitution, and you will find that the word 'God' is nowhere mentioned in it. Cassandra is unaware that the person who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance did NOT include the phrase 'under God', would not have wanted it in there, and that the phrase was only added to the Pledge during the era of McCarthyism, when we were fighting those 'Godless Commies'. All Cassandra NEEDS to do is to read the copious writings of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, the two most important of our Founding Fathers when it comes to the actual STRUCTURE of our government. She might come across Thomas Jefferson saying "It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg if my neighbor believes in one God, many gods, or no god at all". She might come across the startling things that James Madison had to say about the establishment of Christianity in his Memorial and Remonstrance for Religious Freedom during the debate over the constitution of Virginia. She might pick up Thomas Paine's 'The Age of Reason' and find herself shocked to see him write that he 'detested the Bible'. She might discover that Jefferson entirely rewrote the New Testament, stripping out all the things that he regarded as superstitious 'mumbo-jumbo', such as all the miracles.
Cassandra might actually become well-read.
But don't hold your breath.
